I am one who has been very outspoken about the more shady SEO practitioners and about the ridiculously overprices “courses” that are heavily promoted on the Internet. SEO has acquired some of the taint of huckster marketing because of that.

I hope this book helps eliminate some of that. There’s no need to pay some self-styled “Internet Guru” hundreds or thousands of dollars for SEO secrets. There are no secrets: every concept, every “trick”, every piece of advice is available on the Internet for free. Of course you have to find it all, you have to learn what things are outdated, what advice doesn’t work – or you could find 99% here in this book.

Of course it’s not for everyone. It assumes some technical knowledge or at least access to someone with that knowledge. As an example, at several points 301 redirects are used as the solution certain SEO issues. Although some minor direction is given about implementing these, you’d need more than is provided here if you were a neophyte – someone using Blogger or [...] isn’t going to become proficient with Apache from reading this.

The only small complaint I can make is that sometimes the authors use too many examples, especially for the more basic concepts at the beginning of the book. However, too many is far better than too few, so I won’t complain too much. I definitely can’t complain that they left anything out: this could serve as a course book for a SEO class.

I’ll be recommending this book strongly.

Honesty is the Way

The best way to run a business is to be honest.

Your good name can be worth a fortune to you and sometimes it’s no the money that having a good name will bring you, it is the peace of mind.

I’ve been on the internet for 10 years and there is dishonesty at every turn. Usually it’s just little things, but to be honest it really is ridiculous sometimes.

People will promote something and say there are 2 left on the shelf, when they can have as many printed as they want or even worse if it’s a digital product they can send as many as they want.

If you’ve ever seen a product launch the server always blows up, the sales are going through the roof, the site will be shut down forever, and every other trick to pressure people into buying.

I knew one guy selling a $7000.00 course and a $4000.00 course and I keep asking him what the difference was and he finally said there was no $7000.00 course they just said that to move down to the lower $4000.00 course and people would think they were getting a deal.

And you think used car sales people used tricks.

Running an Honest Business

Eventually running a dishonest business is going to catch up to whoever is running it.

If you want to stay in buiness for the long term and have peace of mind honesty is the only way to go.

Even if is costs you some money or some sales sometimes.

The way I like to promote things is to put out a good product, tell the people the honest facts and if they buy it they buy it if they don’t they don’t.

Again in the long run being honest will come through to your email list or on your website and when you get the reputation of being honest it is something that money can’t buy.

Before the internet, I worked at a grocery store for 23 years and I was always known as an honest person. People knew if I said something it was the truth and people will respect you for that.

I’m certainly not saying I don’t slip sometimes, but if I do it usually isn’t on purpose I just got the facts wrong or something like that.

Honesty and Promoting Products

I only promote products I believe will help people. I know some people, who are actually very nice people, who will sell any junk product out there.

Selling a junk product really isn’t dishonest, but it really isn’t good business practice either because if one of your followers buys a junk product they are less likely to buy from you again.

Most of the things I promote I have bought and found useful myself, but it is impossible to buy everything, also there is not enough time to test every product, so sometimes you just have to go by what you have heard about the product.

If I see somthing I haven’t bought, or heard much about, but looks like something that will help people, I always make sure there is an easy money back guarantee, so I at least know if somebody feels they’ve wasted their money, they can get a refund.

Also it usually doesn’t take long to get feed back on a product and then I quit promoting it if I feel it was a mistake to have promoted it in the first place.

This comes under the heading of you have to do the best you can do and nobody is going to be perfect, and people won’t expect you to be and if you promote a lemon by mistake sometimes, it is your overall reputation that people are going to remember.

If you are honest and nice, people will be more forgiving of you errors.

So thats enough of a speech for now.

The ABC of SEO

The “ABC of SEO” is an alphabetic tour through the often obscure world and language of Search Engine Optimization and Marketing. All the important SEO subjects including competition analysis, keywords, links and page ranking algorithms are well and clearly covered. Although the A-Z format sounds dry the book is easy to read from cover to cover. The author provides many interesting anecdotes and asides and has an engaging writing style.

The “ABC of SEO” scores highly by pointing out both good and bad practices and is an ideal read for anyone thinking of hiring an outside optimization firm or who wants to put in place a methodology for a team working on websites. It would also be of great use to any web author or blogger wishing to optimize their own site.

The book does not assume any knowledge about search engine marketing beyond basic concepts of the Web and HTML. An ideal book for anyone wanting to better promote their website.

This is a surprising book. I bought on the recommendations here and elsewhere, but when I pulled it from the box I was underwhelmed by it’s size. As has been implied here, I was guilty of unfairly judging the book by it’s cover. Who’d have thought that a tiny little book could have such a high density of high quality material?

I’ve been surveying the SEO landscape, playing catch-up so to speak, and have bought a number of highly-rated SEO and “make money on Google” books recently. This little book provides a highly-concentrated bundle of insights, and is money well-spent. It’s certainly up there with the O’Reilly books in terms of the density of useful information and clarity of thought.

This book is definetely worth every penny I paid for it. I started off knowing next to nothing about HTML coding. Now I know all about creating a web page/site, styling the text, including web graphics/colours (and about the hexidecimal colour system), tables (which are widely and a useful tool for web pafge layout, I found out), frames (another widely used tool – like on THIS page here!), embedding multimedia (and customizing it) and MUCH more. There are even useful introductions to javascript, cascading style sheets and stuff about actually putting your website on the web, and, at the beginning, stuff about web site design (e.g. for potential customers, etc.). There is a reference section for all the stuff you’ve learnt and a resources section both at the back. A BIG feature is the project running throughout the book, which gets you to create your own web site and build it up, gradually adding more and more stuff to it as you learn it. This consolidates your learning.

This book is EXCELLENT for beginners, who know nothing, and takes you through to, I would say, at least intermediate level. There is also stuff on how to make pages ready for the up-and-coming XHTML. Everything is fully,and very well explained, with useful short tests throughout. The only critcism I can think of is that it is a bit repetative in places – but then that can only be good for a beginner. If you want to learn HTML (and a bit more), this is a VERY good place to start!

How to Become an Expert

The first thing you need to do to become an expert in your field is to find a subject you are intested in.

If you build your business around something you are passionate about, it will come through and also you won’t get bored with what you are doing.

When you are building your business you have to brand yourself in your articles, videos, etc.

Branding is when you get people to know your name and find a way to make people remember you.

You have to promote you.

You have to have a personality that people recognize.

You’ve seen people on T.V. screaming and yelling about there product and people recognize that that is their personality and it makes them stand out from the crowd.

I am more the person that is calm and trys to put out good consistant information and I think that is my personality, people trust me because I am consistent, don’t say crazy things, and do my best to come across as a nice guy, because in real life that is what people know me as, the nice guy, so I am not being something online I am not offline.

Promote Yourself as the Expert

When you do your content do it with authority and promote yourself as the expert. If you say you are the expert, people will believe you are the expert, as long as you come off as the authority and back that up with solid content.

If you give them valuable content, you will become the expert, because that is how everybody becomes an expert in their field.

The best way to make your content excellent is to do your best and keep at it. You have to dig in, get it done and then keep improving it.

Expert Blogging

When you blog you are keeping yourself and your information in front of your audience on a consistant basis. If people are following you daily or just often and you are putting out good solid information on your subject, why wouldn’t they think you are the expert ?

Blogging is a great way to become the expert in your field, so blog daily if possible, and if daily is not possible set a schedule, it is better to blog once a week consistantly than 4 times a week and then nothing for a month.

Testamonials make you the Expert

If you get a nice email from somebody, ask them if you can use it as a testamonial. Get testamonials and put them on your site and that will be powerful in branding you as the expert.

When you become more of a web expert, video tape testamonials and put them on your site.

If people see other people saying you are the expert, you will become the expert.

Content makes you the Expert

I know I keep talking about content, but there is a good reason why, and that is becomes when it comes down to it, that is what it is all about.

The harder you work, the more you research, the more you learn about the subject you are presenting yourself as an expert on, the more you will be the expert.

And remember always show confidence, even if you are trembling inside, on the outside show them you are the one to come to for information on your subject.

About Being Perfect

One thing that holds people back is that they want to be perfect.

It is more important to get things done and then try to make it perfect later, than to not get any work out because you don’t want to release it until it is just right.

One of the traits of great acheivers is that when they come up with an idea they dig right in and move ahead, worrying about the details later.

I am one of those that moves ahead with things and in the beginning I often wondered if I wasn’t going about things the wrong way.

But the more I read about the way other people were dong things on the internet, I found out to my surprise, that plowing ahead with a project is pretty much the way to go.

I have talked to people personally that have admitted to me right up front that they had trouble getting started with projects.

Many of them not only had trouble starting projects but if they did start something, they also had trouble finishing things.

The way I see it, the answer to this is just to force yourself to dig in and then force yourself to finish the project, even if in your mind you want to make it better and don’t feel it is finished.

Set yourself a cut off date and when that date arrives you are done, again with the idea that you can improve the product later.

You know, if you really think about it life isn’t perfect, and bascially nothing is perfect, so why hold back on doing anything trying to make it perfect.

It probably never will be perfect anyway, so just get it done and do your best.

I think that is another important concept, if you always tell yourself you are doing your best, it will take the pressure of being perfect off of you.

Another thing to keep in mind, a lot of people will get mad at themselves because they don’t know something.

Again keep in mind that you can’t know, what you don’t know, and the reason you don’t know it, is because you have just not gotten that far in your learning of the subject yet.

I mean you can’t start out on the web for a few days and then be mad because you don’t know how to design a website, it take years to learn that and you are just starting.

Remember that if you keep learning every day, and put in the hard work you will eventually learn what you need to know.

So my best advice is to work hard every day, keep learning, keep moving ahead, and you will make it to any goal you set for yourself.

Just remember it doesn’t happen overnight, for anybody.
